Question #1 [type your answer here] Understanding The Different Learning Challenges Amongst Students Regardless of the class or students you are teaching; there will always be a diverse set of learning abilities that demand your attention. Given that there are eight learning styles, a teacher has to think outside the box when it comes to meeting the needs of each of their learners. Different teaching strategies satisfy and stimulate learners in various ways, and as a teacher, you’re required to put in extra hours and effort to meet their needs. However, once a teacher develops these strategies, they’re rewarded with empowered and thriving learners. way to have parents be a part of their child’s journey and have a good understanding of their skills and monitoring their performances on a regular basis. Behaving Badly: A Break in Development Means More Behavioral Challenges While academics were at the forefront of classroom concerns this past year, there are others quickly climbing up the polls. When we asked teachers to provide their own suggestions of the challenges they faced outside of academics, student behavior was at the very top of the list among elementary school through high school students, even above stress and differentiating instruction. Change the setting. If a student is upset and starts acting out, encourage them to go to another room or another activity like reading quietly, with you or another teacher.. Make sure the student feels supported, but also understands why you pulled him or her aside. Different situations require a different response on your part. For example, if the student is over-stimulated by an activity, you might suggest that the child focus on one activity at a time. Similarly you may decide to put a limit on how many children can be at a particular learning station. 2. Respond calmly. Responding calmly to challenging behavior is one of the most useful steps you can take in these situations. Take a few moments to pause before deciding how you will deal with the behavior and help the child return to the classroom's activities. Teach alternate behaviors. Mirroring positive behavior yourself can help children learn more appropriate means of expressing their wants and needs. If a child has trouble sharing with his or her classmates, explain that they should ask to borrow items, rather than just taking them (i.e. "Can I read that book with you, or can I see it after you're done?"). 3. Children relish the opportunity to make their own choices. Try to offer students options in terms of the activities. This way, children will also learn more about what they enjoy, as well as discover new areas of interest. 4. Notice the positive, and offer students encouragement. Offering students genuine praise for positive behavior has a ripple effect, as the act of recognition boosts their confidence and desire to continue along this path. 5. Practice consistency in your classroom. Establishing consistent routines helps students feel less anxious. It also reinforces that there are certain group expectations you have for the class as a whole. Accordingly, it is important to practice consistency, both in terms of making these activities (i.e. handwashing, naptime) a part of your daily routine and ensuring that all children participate in them. Teach the Building Blocks of Education Elementary teachers are vital to society, given that they help format and teach the building blocks of education. Teaching the basics of reading and math may seem boring to some, but students will use and build on these skills throughout the rest of their lives. The importance of teaching elementary students is vital to the health of our society. 2. Impact Goes Well Beyond the Classroom While a child’s parents are usually the first to have an impact on a child, many teachers all across the nation spend more time with students than perhaps their own parents do during any given week. Simply put, a career as an elementary teacher not only helps secure the building blocks of learning, but it has immense social impacts on a person’s future.
