Higher Education: Is It Worth It?
Education is highly looked upon in most parts of the world higher education seems like a
waste in different aspects. My working thesis is “While some believe that higher education may
be a waste of time, as an education major, I will explore whether college/university students are
more informed, develop life/social skills, and acquire self-knowledge”.
However, many critics
believe college does not equal success. According to Centeno he was sure that college wouldn’t
make people skilled leaders with a shot at the corner office. “Developing skills such as
leadership, decision making, people and resource management takes real practice and
experience. These are skills which cannot be acquired in the classroom.” (Centeno22).
College education has the potential to foment powerful gains in social and emotional
learning. “College education provides foundation for social and emotional development and
maturation, stronger social and emotional skills becoming more informed and developed”
(Montoya2022) Gaining admission to college requires significant self-awareness, knowledge,
and management which goes on to show how going to college help with psychological skills,
becoming more developed and savvier in a certain major or trade. With, those diverse areas of
study and expertise share focus on emotional and psychosocial mastery meaning a broad
spectrum of characteristics and abilities are required to adapt changes in the external
environment while maintaining self-efficacy.

knowledge to be boost your acceptance encouraging self-development, practicing self-control,
and working creatively and productively.
Higher education gives a person more life/social skills by stepping in a new environment
and learning how to be an adult as the mind will begin transitioning. People will learn how to be
an adult and handle life situations/challenges that is thrown at them! Students will go through
more assessments as they were already familiar to you before According to Clyde (2018) “Daniel
Goleman, a widely recognized thought leader about emotional intelligence, defines this capacity
in terms of self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skills”. The
nationally renowned Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL),
adopts a similar model, emphasizing five core competencies: self-awareness, self-management,
responsible decision making, relationship skills, and social awareness. Goleman studied many
different methods trying to understand how life/social skills are developed he even did self-
assessments and tests on different individuals to be one hundred percent certain on his gains.
Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) (successor to the federal No Child Left Behind Act), set
forth a compelling vision in which all students in America are taught to high academic standards
that will prepare them to succeed in college and careers.
College isn’t just about earning a degree. If we step back and examine what a college
experience entails, we can see that it is more than just attending classes and taking exams. In
fact, higher education is about learning new ways of thinking and acquiring problem-solving
skills. Employers want their candidates to be well-spoken with strong proficiencies in
communication and writing. They want employees who can deliver on their chosen disciplines,
while also presenting impeccable soft skill knowledge. This is where many become mature
